The stakes are always high when a team strives to maintain their status as champions. As in the case of the De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Spikers—a team well aware that they’re the squad everyone is watching—the pressure to pull off a four peat this year couldn’t be greater.

After escaping the National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs in four sets, the Lady Spikers’ head Coach Ramil de Jesus admitted that he was frustrated with how the team performed and ordered them to report straight to training right after the game.

La Salle’s veteran coach was disappointed with the 25 errors the Spikers committed in the game especially during the second set which the Lady Bulldogs sealed. But though the NU managed to get rhythm on their side, the Taft-based squad was just too strong for the Bulldogs.

Sa player ko na ‘yun eh. Sabi ko sa kanila, pag ganoong pagkakamali, lalo na sa service, kayo na yun. Hindi na pwedeng isisi pa sa kalaban yun. Kayo yun, kayo yung lumalabas sa service area, kayo magse-serve, lahat yun kayo gagawa,” said de Jesus.

The 11 time UAAP champion even compared the Spikers’ mistakes to a basketball player who constantly misses their free throws.

Parang sa basketball, free throw yan, araw-araw mong ginagawa mo yan. Kung ma-shoot mo, eh di okay. Eh ang nangyari, kapos, hindi man lang tumama ng ring,” said de Jesus .

Despite starting the season undefeated, La Salle’s mentor believes that the team has a lot to work on in terms of their performance. Needless to say, coach Ramil de Jesus is only aiming for perfection as the first round of the season winds down. Teams tend to adopt a complacent mentality when they’re on top of the ladder. For La Salle, however, coach de Jesus insists on perfectionism in order to bag another trophy for Taft Avenue.
