Get your serious sports fix with these 5 films to stream now

A few seriously good sports films for your viewing pleasure during these trying times

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a nightmare for everyone. Multiple events have been postponed and canceled. And for sports fans, March was supposed to be an exciting time, especially with the NBA playoffs fast approaching, NCAA’s March Madness, UAAP volleyball season, and of course the PBA.

Yes, there are more pressing issues to worry about right now and it’s important to stay indoors but if you’re looking to pass the time, here are five sports films you should stream right now:

Space Jam

It’s ironic because “Space Jam” predicted this pandemic exactly 23 years ago. We don’t mean to spoil you but the film saw the NBA shutting down because of an alien virus. Aside from this telepathic forecast, it’s a good movie for basketball fans who miss watching Michael Jordan and the ’90s basketball superstars back in the day. “Space Jam” is also a great teaser before we see LeBron James take over the next “Space Jam” film.

Any Given Sunday

“Any Given Sunday” gives a peek into a professional football player’s life behind closed doors. According to writer and director Oliver Stone, the film is an authentic depiction of what NFL players go through during their careers—partying, drugs, fights, and more. Watch this if you want to see how professional athletes live their lives and find success in the sporting world.

Kobe Bryant’s Muse

Kobe Bryant may be gone but his legacy lives on. In “Kobe Bryant’s Muse,” (released in 2015), Bryant narrates his comeback from one of the most challenging times of his career when he suffered an Achilles injury. The five-time NBA champion also talks about the genesis of the Black Mamba, the sexual assault scandal in 2003, and his journey behind winning two championships right after.

Goon

“Goon” is a feel-good comedy about Doug Glatt (Seann William Scott) who finds personal fulfillment as an enforcer for a minor league ice hockey team. Glatt’s knockout punches are one of a kind, which leads him to becoming an important member of a team playing a sport he barely knows.

Southpaw

“Southpaw” follows the life of boxer Billy “The Great” Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) who hits rock bottom after losing his wife in an accident and daughter to protective services. Filmed in the suburbs of New York City, watch this drama if you’re looking for inspiration to get your life back together.
