Nike has launched a digital workout tournament called Living Room Cup where people can compete with some of their favorite professional athletes around the world.
On Apr. 5, football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo kicked off the ab workout challenge via Instagram. Ronaldo finished 142 reps of core crushers in 42 seconds—and then invited fans and followers to beat his record in one week.
Throughout the next few weeks, Nike will enlist its ambassadors to do a variety of workout challenges as people continue to self-isolate. Nike’s indoor training app, specifically Nike Training Club, is also releasing weekly workout tips to help users compete with Nike ambassadors. Users can participate by uploading their workout on Instagram using the hashtags #playinside and #thelivingroomcup.
“In 2020, athletes across the world are choosing a courageous optimism in making sport a daily habit indoors. Of course, competition is also a characteristic that defines the world of sport, and not just competing against your personal best—but friendly competition against others too,” Nike said in a statement.
The Living Room Cup is part of Nike’s strategic plan in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. Nike CEO John Danahoe said that the brand will shift its focus to its indoor training apps for the next few weeks. The digital platform has received positive feedback with a 30 percent sales increase on its e-commerce platform.
