President Rodrigo Duterte announced in a nationwide address on Wednesday, July 1, that Metro Manila and Cebu City will remain under general community quarantine (GCQ) and enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), respectively.

For fitness enthusiasts or even those who are tired of lying down on their sofas, sports is here to save you. As the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) puts it, “GCQ regions can now play the sports they love again.” The IATF says running, cycling, golf, swimming, tennis, badminton, equestrian, and skateboarding are now allowed for areas under GCQ and moderate general community quarantine (MGCQ). Meanwhile for Cebu City, outdoor activities are still prohibited.

According to the National Parks Development Committee, Rizal Park, which already had its soft reopening on Wednesday allows citizens to exercise from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Citizens under GCQ and MGCQ are required to follow minimum public health standards, specifically wearing a mask and practicing social distancing. Sharing sports equipment is still prohibited.

Gyms and fitness studios have also been permitted to operate under MGCQ and GCQ but limited to only 50 percent of the venue’s capacity. Mass gatherings like sports events are allowed in GCQ and MGCQ as well but just like gyms and fitness studios, only up to 50 percent of capacity is allowed.
