The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has released design sketches of its proposed bike lane models for EDSA via Facebook on May 29, Friday.
This proposal was released after DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade confirmed in a televised meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte that they will set up several bike lanes in the country. The DOTr has yet to release an official statement about its EDSA bike design.
“We will change EDSA. Ultimately, we will have bike lanes and we will coordinate with MMDA and DPWH to revive bicycle lanes,” said Tugade. If our experiment will be proven feasible, we will make the structure permanent. Bicycle lanes will also not be limited to EDSA but also to parts of the country if it works.”
Over the past few weeks, bikes have been a reliable source of transportation for many citizens, especially during quarantine where public transport options like jeeps and buses were still not allowed to operate. On May 24, MMDA installed bike lanes along the country’s main thoroughfare in preparation for World Bicycle Day on June 3.
