In 2020, J. Cole, considered one of the greatest rappers of all time, is trying to make it to the NBA. And the hip-hop icon is actually one step closer to his goal after the Detroit Pistons reached out to him to try out.
The Pistons’ offer came right after rapper and producer Master P confirmed that J. Cole wants to make the transition to the NBA. J. Cole was featured in a commercial by sports brand Puma where the rapper is seen grinding hard on the basketball court.
“You can’t be serious. I know you ain’t bout to try and do what I think you bout to try to do, ’cause that would be crazy. And you ain’t crazy is you? I mean, what’s the odds?” says Master P, who also once tried out for the NBA in the 1990s.
“When said out loud, all the best dreams sound crazy. Dreamer was created with the belief that, still, we must follow ours, no matter how unachievable they may seem to others,” says Cole.

J. Cole, who’s currently 35 years old, once suited up for his high basketball team at Terry Sanford in North Carolina. However, he didn’t pursue basketball in college when he was offered to try out for the St. John’s University men’s basketball program; he chose music instead over sports. But good news for the rapper as he can still try out for the NBA despite no collegiate basketball experience whatsoever. The NBA allows teams to reach out to any player they want just like how the Pistons have already shown interest in Cole.
NBA reporters don’t think J. Cole can make it
“No. J. Cole is not making the roster. Do you guys see what he looked like? In the video? A 35 year old dad. This is ridiculous, I don’t understand why we’re talking about it,” says sports radio talk show host Nick Wright in an episode of “First Things First” released on Aug.5.
NBA analyst and commentator Chris Broussard also pointed out in the same episode that Cole should aim for the All-Star Celebrity game instead, which happens annually. J. Cole already has doubters but the rapper is determined to prove them wrong just like what he did in his music career.
