On Mar.12, Thursday, Utah Jazz player Rudy Gobert tested positive for coronavirus. This led the NBA to suspend the regular season for at least 30 days to ensure the safety of players, staff and fans.

Hours after Gobert’s positive diagnosis was announced, his teammate Donovan Mitchell was also diagnosed for COVID-19. According to ESPN senior reporter Adrian Wojnarowski, Mitchell may have contracted the virus due to Gobert’s carelessness in the locker room as he was reportedly cracking jokes and touching everyone and everything around him.

It’s not a surprise that Gobert was taking the COVID-19 threat lightly in the locker room especially after a viral video of him doing the same thing in a press conference surfaced online. According to Wojnarowski, the whole Utah Jazz team is not happy with Gobert’s carelessness and there’s plenty of work to be done to fix the team’s relationship with the All-Star.

Multiple teams and several other people could have possibly been infected due to  close contact with Gobert. The teams that went up against the Jazz in the past 10 days specifically the Toronto Raptors, Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Oklahoma City Thunder and Boston Celtics are now under self-quarantine.

So what can we learn from Rudy Gobert’s carelessness?

Gobert opened up via Instagram that he deeply regrets his actions in the past few days. He admits to being careless and has no excuses for his actions.

Even if the center wasn’t aware he had the virus, taking it lightly and making jokes about it is borderline inappropriate especially now that the COVID-19 threat is getting worse. Let Gobert’s actions teach us all a lesson and that is to be cautious and take extra precautions during this time—wash our hands often, avoid large crowds, eat healthy and stay indoors as much as possible. Moreover, this is also the best time to radiate good vibes and keep optimistic that the world can defeat the virus.
