Last week, Apple launched another edition to its Apple Watch Series alongside the new iPhones. As far as fitness smartwatches go, Fitbit has been gaining the lead the past year, but it looks like that might be put to the test with the latest Apple Watch 3. It has a lot of the same stuff as its predecessor but with new features every fitness enthusiast will love.

Built-in GPS and altimeter

With this feature, you can see how far you’ve run or how high you are. The barometric altimeter is the newest addition to the Apple Watch 3 that was missing from the previous model. Its inclusion means your bike in the hills or your hikes can be more accurately recorded.

The barometric altimeters rely on air pressure to measure altitude, so be warned that this can be affected by the weather. Though that may be the case, its addition would be beneficial for cyclists who want to get an accurate reading of their rides.

Swim-proof

Another useful trait of this device is that it is water-resistant for up to 50 meters. You can use it for snorkeling, white water rafting, and other water activities as long it’s not exposed to high pressure.

Connect to gym equipment

Apple is really amping up its fitness features for this watch as it now lets you connect to gym equipment. They’ve introduced the WatchOS 4 system that syncs your device with compatible equipment: Life Fitness, Cybex, Schwinn, Matrix, Startrac, Technogym, and StairMaster.

Connect to your phone

One of the most convenient features of the Apple Watch is that it has all the functions you need from your phone. You can leave your phone at home and still receive texts, calls, and app notifications. It even syncs with whatever fitness and workout apps you have, so the results of your workout are directly sent and recorded.

With this, you don’t have to worry about carrying your phone around when you train or go on an adventure. However, its cellular will only be compatible with iPhone 6 or newer running on iOS 11 or later.
