It seems that the Nintendo Switch has overtaken the PlayStation 4 as Southeast Asia’s favorite game console. The market analyst group of the National Purchase Diary Panel reported that Nintendo Switch sales in March 2020 were more than double compared to last year. And it’s no surprise that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is responsible for the significant sales increase.
E-commerce company iPrice Group also reported this month that Nintendo Switch has been the top choice of game console for Asian gamers. The rise in Switch sales particularly grew in March—when regions like the Philippines, Hong Kong and Indonesia were under lockdown. According to iPrice, over 1.5 million people searched for the Nintendo Switch on online shopping platforms like Shopee and Lazada.

Meanwhile, the PlayStation 4 now ranks as the second choice for gamers in Southeast Asia. Based on iPrice’s mid-March and mid-April report, the interest for PS4 only shot up to 135 percent—a far cry from Nintendo Switch’s 245 percent increase. Moreover, the total demand for Nintendo Switch is also 1.6 times higher than the PS4.
