Here’s why it’s totally fine to swim during your period

There’s no need to let your monthly cycle get in the way of a swim session or any workout for that matter.
If anything, enhanced blood flow during exercise will help alleviate menstrual cramps and other symptoms that may occur. As long as the pain is tolerable, you should be able to do your swim workout without any issues because the outside pressure from the water will prevent any leakage.
If you need to do a swim-bike-run session, I suggest wearing a two-piece trisuit (no undies, please) so it’s easier to put on a pad after you get out of the water.
If you’re concerned about hygiene or possible leakage due to a heavy flow, consider a tampon. I wouldn’t recommend wearing a sanitary pad for obvious reasons; it can also cause chafing on the bike and run. Using a tampon makes a huge difference. The important thing is to make sure that it’s inserted properly to avoid any discomfort.
Some women, including pros, go to the extremes of taking hormonal pills to avoid the hassle of a period during an important race. If you’re open to the idea, consult a gynecologist who can inform you of the side effects and help find the best pill for you.
Your period doesn’t have to dampen your training. Be aware of what options are available and find the one that works best for you.
