The Philippine women’s basketball team clinched its first ever SEA Games gold medal today, Dec. 10, at the Mall of Asia Arena, after taking down Thailand, 91-71, in the women’s basketball 5×5 finals.
Jack Animam led the Gilas girls with 21 points, five rebounds, and two blocks. Animam, who shot 9-for-10 from the field, erupted in the third quarter, which built a comfortable lead for the home team. Role players Afril Bernardino and Janine Pontejos also combined for 26 points to crown the Philippines as the new 5×5 basketball queens in the region.
The team concluded its SEA Games campaign with a perfect 3-0 record, ending the women’s team’s gold medal drought.
